Life has changed for us all at the moment. Think about patterns you have fallen into and whether you could adapt them and create more positive routines. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is having an impact on everyone’s lives. During this time, you may be bored, frustrated or lonely. You may also feel low, worried, anxious, or be concerned about your health or that of those close to you. You may also feel concerned about the economic impact of the pandemic and how this could affect your job or finances. These are all common reactions to the difficult situation we face. Everyone reacts differently to events and changes in the way that we think, feel and behave vary between different people and over time. It’s important that you take care of your mind as well as your body.

Most people will find strategies that work for them and for the difficult feelings associated with the pandemic. Some people, especially those with pre-existing mental health problems, may need extra support.

Strong mental health isn’t just the absence of mental health problems. Being mentally or emotionally healthy is much more than being free of depression, anxiety, or other psychological issues. Rather than the absence of mental illness, mental health refers to the presence of positive characteristics.

People who are mentally healthy have:

  1. A sense of contentment.
  2. A zest for living and the ability to laugh and have fun.
  3. The ability to deal with stress and bounce back from adversity.
  4. A sense of meaning and purpose, in both their activities and their relationships.
  5. The flexibility to learn new skills and adapt to change.
  6. A balance between work and play, rest and activity, etc.
  7. The ability to build and maintain fulfilling relationships.
  8. Self-confidence and high self-esteem.

Try to engage in useful activities (such as cleaning, cooking or exercise) or meaningful activities (such as reading or keeping in touch with friends). You might find it helpful to write a plan for your day or week. And always have hope. Don’t feel shy about asking for help.
